what the blog is about

Splat(s):- a sound of something soft and wet or heavy striking a surface.

Brain Splats:- In the written sense, the sound of intellectual capacity striking the surface of the written, or typed, page.

I needed to get back into writing. I read somewhere that a good exercise is to write for at least 15 minutes a day. It could be one of my own projects, a diary, some question you want to answer, some meaningful, or meaningless, blurb. Just do it for a minimum of 15 minutes a day, or hopefully more. I figured I would do this but up the stakes a bit by putting it on a blog. This blog. However good, tedious, different, just whatever came out.

The blog has quickly evolved to a mix of essays, writing exercises, attempts at poems, regular features like “Monday haiku, and what I learned this weekend“, “the alternative take“, and “tv vegetable“, the latter two are quick to get to via the menus above (if you are interested).

Once I got well past the 100 post mark, I realised that it was time to focus more of my efforts towards other writing projects. Around mid June 2012, I reduced the blog posts to around three a week (usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays). I still attempt daily writing of some kind.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot, I have just a couple of rules:

  • Privacy – I don’t think I’m ready to totally put my person out there as I’m a bit private, and I don’t want someone stealing me. I will therefore use aliases where necessary.
  • I have a couple of projects on the go and I don’t wish to put too much about them on here. There may be a couple of days where I add something along the lines of “time used on other projects” – but I will try not to cheat that way i.e. and do nothing (as of 20 March 2012, I haven’t)!
Enjoy the blog.

The following text was the original description of the blog used until 20 March 2012:

Do you want to improve your writing skills? Perhaps the quality, or maybe just the quantity. Well I’m not going to be explaining the ins and outs of writing structure here. There won’t be many tips on punctuation or style as a function of this site. I’m interested in writing but with a family, and the daily goings on, have little time to do it. A typical excuse you might say, and I would likely agree with you. So I figured, let’s start with some commitment. A useful, or so it would on the surface, tip, is to write for 15 minutes a day. It doesn’t matter what about. It could be one of your projects, a diary, some question you want to answer, some meaningful, or meaningless, blurb. Just do it for a minimum of 15 minutes a day (or more if you want). No cheating, you cannot do 30 minutes one day and have it count for the next. So I figured, lets give it a go.

Then I figured on something else. What would I put in it? Could I keep up the commitment, and if so, what would I write about. Surely 15 minutes is nothing much is it? So I figured I would up the stakes and put it on a blog. That is pretty much whatever it is that comes out. Some days will be ultra tedious no doubt, and others, well let’s just see what happens. Can I do that?

So here it is, with just a couple of rules:

  • Privacy – I don’t think I’m ready to totally put my person out there as I’m a bit private, and I don’t want someone stealing me. I will therefore use aliases.
  • I have a couple of projects on the go and I don’t wish to put too much about them on here. There may be a couple of days where I add something along the lines of “time used on other projects” – but I will try not to cheat that way i.e. and do nothing!

The rest, it can go on here. Enjoy and hopefully don’t get too bored.

Hey Elliot, I hope all’s well. I’m sure you have lots going on but I still thought I should ask if you intend to start writing on this blog any time soon. I have a simple, selfish reason for that query – I used to enjoy reading your posts. Take care, man and have fun 🙂
